Top 5 Must-Watch Movies in October: Kids Edition

As the days get shorter and the air gets crisper, there’s nothing like snuggling up with the family, a blanket, and a big bowl of popcorn to get into the Halloween spirit. In our house, October is all about cozy movie nights, and I’ve got a list of must-watch flicks that my kids and I love revisiting each year. From spooky fun to a dash of magic, here are our top 5 must-watch movies in October before Halloween arrives!

  1.  The Nightmare Before Christmas

This one’s an all-time favorite from my childhood, and now it’s become a staple in our home too. Jack Skellington’s journey from the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town to discovering the magic of Christmas is one we never get tired of. The whimsical characters, Tim Burton’s signature animation style, and those unforgettable songs make it the perfect mix of spooky and sweet. My kids love singing along to "What’s This?" while trying to decide if it’s a Halloween or Christmas movie (spoiler: it’s both!).

  2. Beetlejuice

Ah, Beetlejuice! Every time we watch this movie, I can’t help but relate to Lydia Deetz. Growing up, her character—the moody, artistic girl who’s had enough of the “normal” world—totally spoke to me. Plus, who can forget Beetlejuice himself? He’s weird, he’s wild, and my kids crack up at his antics every time. Just be careful: you don’t want to say his name three times, or who knows what will happen in your living room!

  3. Hocus Pocus

This is one of those movies that makes me feel like a kid again. Hocus Pocus has everything—laughs, magic, and witches who are seriously up to no good. I remember watching it for the first time and being completely enchanted by the Sanderson Sisters. Now, watching it with my kids, they love seeing the trio of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy cause chaos in modern-day Salem. The whole family ends up quoting spells and cackling like witches by the end!

  4. The Addams Family (1991)

You can’t get through October without hanging out with everyone’s favorite kooky, spooky family—The Addams Family. My kids are obsessed with Wednesday Addams and her deadpan humor, while I always get a kick out of Morticia and Gomez’s love story (relationship goals, am I right?). The movie is packed with weird and wonderful moments, and the catchy theme song is an instant mood-booster. Bonus points for the fun costumes if your family wants to dress up like the Addamses this Halloween!

  5. Coraline

For families who enjoy a little more spookiness, Coraline is perfect. It’s beautifully animated, a little eerie, and has a story that sparks the imagination. The otherworldly adventure of Coraline discovering a parallel universe where everything seems better—but with a creepy twist—keeps my kids hooked every time. It’s one of those movies that gets under your skin in the best way and sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Whether you’re in the mood for spooky, silly, or sweet, these movies will bring all the Halloween feels into your home. So, grab your coziest blanket, settle in with the kids, and let the magic (and mischief) begin!
